  • My topic is introducing the class to the world of server autism.
  • This topic interest me because autism can be so varied.  It can be almost undetectable but it can also be so sever that the child is non-verbal, aggresive, and needs help to do every day activities.  It also interest me because my cousin has autism and I grew up seeing people judging him for it.  I want to spread the awarness to others so hopefully other children will not go through what my cousin went through.  This topic also interest me because I worked at group home for children with sever autism.  I saw everything and anything you could amagine.  Every child there was non-verbal and needed help doing most everything.  They were all very agressive and self abusive.  It broke my heart to see the children hurting themselves and that is why I want to learn more about autism.
  • I said some reasons above about why the topic is importuant to me.  But once again the topic is importaunt to me because I see what children with autism go through daily.  They get put down, people look at the funny, and no one understands what they are doing.  People can not understand why they may hit themselves or bash their heads into desks and walls.  But if people were more supportive it might help them.  Its also importaunt to me because of my cousin.
  • Some questions I have about this topic are why do parents give up on there kids with autism so easily?  Why are parents willing to put their kids into homes so fast?  While we ever know what causes autism?  Why do more and more children keep getting diagnoised?
  • As an insider I would like to tell “outsiders” not to judge these children and adults.  I would like to spread awarness about the different degrees of autism.  I would also like to share some of my experinces with children with autism.  Things that worked and things that didnt work.  I would want to share the good stories and the bad.  This way people dont just get a bad taste of sever autism becuase the kids i worked with and grew to love had their hard times but they were wonderful kids.

  1. I think that this would be interesting. I would like to see how autism effects children and how their daily lives are. Or how is it to work with children with autism, i work at a school we have a very limited amount of children who have a disability. I get stressed and aggravated when working with children who do not have disabilities, it is rewarding but still stressful so i would find it very interesting to see how it is to work with children with disabilities. I think this would be a good topic for you to explore.

  2. I think that the topic you are doing is one that will allow people to take a more in depth look into the lives of children with autism. From someone who has first hand experience working with children with autism, I too find that many people do not really understand what it is like for some children. I worked with a family of three boys all who were diagnosed with severe autism, and they all had sensory issues to the extreme of where they hated the way the water felt on their body when they showered. Things like this can impact a child, the parents, the school they go to etc. I think the way your looking at it is very good. To allow for people to get in to the real life world of autism is interesting. Good luck with it and I think that the more personal and first hand experiences you have will be good fot it!

  3. This is a good topic. I myself don’t know that much about autism so it would be interesting to see what really goes on. I know disabilities are hard, my great aunt had down syndrome, but I can’t imagine what it’s like to have autism so severe that you can’t talk. I also think it would be good if you included something about you cousin since he’s one of the reasons why you’re doing this. I’m actually excited to see what you come up with because I would honestly like to know and understand what autism is really like.

  4. Katrina–
What I appreciate about your topic is the combination of personal experience and social commentary. I think you’ve found your purpose in making this personal essay film–you want to help outsiders have a more comprehensive and compassionate understanding of what it means to live with severe autism. You mention how people stare and judge–how will your personal essay film work to show what it means to live with autism? Education and information seems are an important way to begin changing people’s perceptions and fears.

  5. I think you’ve got a good angle, here, Katrina, in thinking about how to show other people to withhold their judgment about autistic individuals. I’m interested now in how you are LITERALLY going to show that: what kinds of images or scenes would best help people understand? or better yet, what would help them see an autistic person differently than they already do? Do you want to show autistic kids in the midst of their “bewildering” behavior and explain what’s happening? Do you want to show autistic kids doing something OTHER than what people assume that they do?

Stacey’s point about sensory issues is also interesting. What are the kinds of things that we take for granted, that are difficult for autistic kids? How could we use film to make the audience uncomfortable and try to give them a similar experience?

  6. Katrina-

It sounds like you are doing your part to help these children. The world needs more people like you. I am an education major, but I feel like I don’t really know a lot about autism. Are you going to concentrate on personal experiences that you have had, like one child? or are you going to go more broadly? I am interested to see how you tackle it…

  7. I think you have a very interesting topic, but I am also very interesting to see what angle you are going to take it from. Are you going to show the children and what you do with them; maybe you could interview some parents of children with and without autism and get their perspective. I’m curious to see how you let an outsider get a glimpse and better understanding of what it means to have autism and how people should treat children and adults with autism. Good luck!

  8. I am a SEED major and I think autism is a big thing in our society, but many people don’t know anything about it. I think that your film could make a real statement, and have a big impact on people. I know you talked about not putting it on YouTube for that reason but maybe you can make the film in a way that viewers who dont know anything about autism could learn from your video.
